Contrary to years of animosity and distrust between Iran and Saudi Arabia, their relations have remained relatively stable since the 1990s; however, there have been occasional points of tension in recent years! The major source of contention between them stems from their differing interpretations of Islam and differing political objectives; Iran being an Islamic Republic while Saudi Arabia an absolute monarchy 🇮🇷 🇸🇦. Furthermore both countries hold diverging opinions regarding US troops in the region with Iran strongly against it while Saudi Arabia fully supports it 🇺🇸 🇮🇷 🇸🇦.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries imposed a trade embargo on Iran and Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties as a result of their accusations that Iran was interfering in their internal affairs and supporting the protests in Bahrain and Yemen 🇾🇪 ️ 🇮🇷 🇧🇭 🇸🇦 🔛. Saudi Arabia also accused Iran of supporting terrorism, which Iran denied. Tensions between the two nations grew in 2011.
In 2015 Saudi Arabia further escalated tensions by executing a prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, who had spoken out against the Saudi government ️ 🇸🇦. The execution caused outrage in Iran and a mob attacked the Saudi embassy in Tehran prompting Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries to cut off diplomatic ties with Iran ️ 🇮🇷 🇸🇦.
Since then, the two countries have continued to remain at odds 2️⃣. In 2016 Saudi Arabia and its allies launched a military campaign in Yemen against Houthi rebels who are backed by Iran, further escalating tensions between the countries. In 2017, Saudi Arabia accused Iran of supplying weapons to Houthi rebels, and Saudi Arabia, and its allies imposed a blockade on Yemen 🇾🇪 ️ 🇮🇷 🇸🇦 🔛.
In 2018, Saudi Arabia, and its allies accused Iran of involvement in a missile strike against Riyadh, and Saudi Arabia again cut off diplomatic ties with Iran.
In 2019, tensions between the two countries further escalated after a series of drone and missile attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure, which Saudi Arabia blamed on Iran ️ 2️⃣ 🇮🇷 🇸🇦 🔛. The US also blamed Iran, and the US imposed sanctions on Iran in response 🇺🇸 🔛 🇮🇷.
The rivalry between Iran Saudi Arabia and other countries is likely to continue in the future. It is unlikely that they will ever end their differences 🔚. Both countries are interested in maintaining stability in the region, and preventing tensions from escalating further. It is possible that both countries will engage in negotiations and dialogue to reach a compromise ️.
