– Is Saudi Arabia Communist?
Over the years Saudi Arabia has been asked if their country is a communist one. This question arises due to westerners’ misconception that communism only exists in places like China North Korea and the former Soviet Union ❓ 🇰🇷 🇨🇳. While Saudi Arabia may not officially embrace communism as an ideology its government and citizens do demonstrate several features of communism which may come as a surprise to some observers ️ 🇸🇦.
Firstly Saudi Arabia is a monarchy and is ruled by a dynastic family, known as the House of Saud, who has held power since the country’s founding in 1932 and is solely responsible for most major governance decisions. This form of government is very similar to the form of communism that was adopted in the Soviet Union, where a single party held absolute power, and governed through a centralized system. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia’s economic policies can be seen as similar to those of a communist state. This is particularly evident when considering its taxation system: despite having oil wealth they impose only 3% flat rate income tax – far lower than many other nations and in line with communist principles. Moreover, there are numerous state-owned enterprises like Saudi Aramco – similar to state-run firms established in communist countries as part of their five year plans.
Aside from that Saudi Arabia is also a welfare state providing a lots of social benefits to its citizens. This involves the provision of free healthcare and education plethora state pensions and other forms of financial support. These social programs are also similar to those which were put in place in the Soviet Union and other communist states, intended to bring a greater sense of equality and reduce poverty.
Finally Saudi Arabia also has a powerful authoritarian government which is highly centralized and which places restrictions on freedoms of speech religion and the press ️ 🔛 🇸🇦. This is a feature which has been shared by many communist countries as the government seeks to control ideas and information to maintain its authority ️.
Overall it can be seen that while Saudi Arabia is not officially a communist state it does possess many of the features which are traditionally associated with communism ️ 🇸🇦. These include a form of government which is heavily centralized a taxation system which is flat-rate and a welfare system which is extensive. As such it is fair to say that while the country may not be officially communist it does still possess a many features which are similar to those of a communist nation. . .
