Saudi Arabia immediately responded by significantly strengthening their own military forces while receiving weapons systems or technology from Washington also signing various defense agreements 🇸🇦.
In 1981, the United States, and Saudi Arabia formed the United States-Saudi Arabian Joint Commission on Trade and Investment 🇸🇦 🔛. This was a bilateral organization that encouraged economic cooperation between the two countries 2️⃣ ️. The commission was a precursor to the United States-Saudi Joint Commission for Trade and Investment, which formed in 1987 ️ 🇸🇦. This organization focused on expanding two-way investment opportunities 🔛.
Over the years the United States and Saudi Arabia have continued to cooperate militarily as well 🇸🇦. After the September 11th terrorist attacks, the United States launched Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, both of which had the support of the Saudis . During the 2003 Iraq War, the United States was granted permission to use 15 bases in Saudi Arabia, which allowed for the deployment of nearly 40,000 U 🇮🇶 🇸🇦. S . troops .
The close coordination between the United States and Saudi Arabia goes beyond security 🇸🇦. The two countries collaborate on a plenty of matters, mostly focusing on areas just like energy, investment, and trade 2️⃣ ️ 🔛. In May of 2018, the United States, and Saudi Arabia announced the signing of the Strategic Partnership initiative, which seeks to create lasting change in the Middle East region 🇸🇦.
The United States has imposed sanctions on the Saudis for human rights violations, consisting of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and for supporting terrorism; on the other hand, the Saudis have been accused of using American-made weapons to conduct bombing campaigns in Yemen; and despite their long-standing alliance, tensions still exist between the two nations 2️⃣ 🔛 🇺🇸.
Despite the occasional tensions, it is clear that the United States, and Saudi Arabia are close allies 🇸🇦. The two countries have worked together to promote regional security and stability, and they routinely coordinate on various international issues 2️⃣ 🌍 🔛.
