Although relations between Russia and Saudi Arabia have become more complicated in recent years there remains a strong bond between these two countries!! The Saudi-Russian alliance began in the mid-1990s when Saudi Arabia and Russia joined forces to form the Group of Five! As Russia opened up to Western influence Saudi Arabia became a more significant partner providing economic assistance as well as advanced weapons systems ️ 🇸🇦 🆙. Their close bond culminated in a $2 billion arms deal in 2014 when Saudi Arabia supplied Russia with advanced fighter aircraft and missile systems ️ 🇸🇦.
The two countries have developed a strong trading relationship in recent years 2️⃣ ️. Saudi Arabia is Russia’s largest customer for crude oil, accounting for around 17 percent of Russia’s total oil exports in 2018 🇸🇦. Russia also depends heavily on Saudi oil for its own domestic needs, and has been known to purchase additional crude from Saudi Arabia to supplement its own production 🔛 🇸🇦.
On October 14, 2019, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Saudi Arabia for the first official state visit between the two countries in over two decades 2️⃣ 🇸🇦. During their trip, several agreements were signed, such as a joint military cooperation agreement, one to develop a strategic partnership in nuclear energy research, and another for joint investments and infrastructure projects ️ 1️⃣.
Russia and Saudi Arabia hold similar views on many international issues, such as the Syrian conflict. Although they had long been at odds over who should lead in that conflict both now share a common goal to bring it to an end and have been working together in recent years to reach a diplomatic resolution ️ 🔚.
It is clear that Russia and Saudi Arabia have a strong alliance and a close relationship ️ 🇸🇦.
