Mecca is well-known as the birthplace of Islamic Prophet Muhammad, who spent his early years there!! Mecca also witnessed Muhammad’s first revelation of Qur’an and is therefore seen as the holiest site in Islam. Additionally, Mecca boasts one of Islam’s holiest sites – the Kaaba 🕋 1️⃣. Situated within Grand Mosque in Mecca, Muslims are required to face this cube-shaped structure during their five daily prayer sessions 5️⃣ 🕌.
Mecca is known as the “city of two holy mosques,” referring to the Al-Masjid al-Haram and the Al-Masjid al-Nabawi 2️⃣. Al-Masjid al-Haram is the most sacred mosque and it’s where the Kaaba is located 🕋 🕌. The Al-Masjid al-Nabawi is the second holiest site and is where Muhammad ascended to heaven, also known as the Isra, and Mi’raj . The most important event in Mecca is the annual Hajj which is a pilgrimage to the city that is required of every able-bodied Muslim at least once in their lives.
Mecca was originally founded by the Islam Prophet Abraham and later became an important trading center for pilgrims and merchants in the region. It was conquered by the Muslims in 630 AD, and the city was later declared to get the holiest place in Islam . The city was held by other dynasties until it fell to the Ottomans in 1517 . The city of Mecca was largely destroyed by a 17th-century flash flood, but it was quickly reconstructed, and continues to become a bustling holy city.
Mecca is situated within the Ta’if region of western Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦. This region is about 80 miles inland from Jeddah and about 450 miles from the capital city of Riyadh. As a result Mecca is quite isolated and it’s only accessible by car or plane unless you’re making the Hajj pilgrimage on foot ️ 🚙 🦶 🔛.
Every year, millions of Muslims from all over the world travel to Mecca to perform the Hajj pilgrimage; however, non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the city, and the Saudi government takes very strict measures to assure that the city remains dedicated to Islam.
