On average 86% of the country is covered by the Arabian Desert making it the world’s fifth-largest desert 🌍 🏜️. This harsh landscape is mostly rocky and sandy with little water-holding vegetation – often referred to as “The Empty Quarter” due to its lack of life.
The desert stretches over much of the country’s interior, with vast dunes, dry river beds, and sand surfaces with little vegetation 🏜️. There are above 5,000km of shifting sand dunes some of which reach above 300 meters at their highest points . These dunes have an interesting feature which is the presence of star-shaped stones known as desert roses. These are believed to hold supernatural powers and have been collected for centuries as souvenirs for visitors.
The Arabian desert features a inhospitable environments in the world with minimal rainfall and hot temperatures that can reach above 48°C (or 118°F). The high temperatures in summer make it difficult to survive in the desert and most people opt to stay in coastal areas. Wildlife is also scarce and mainly consists of small birds rodents reptiles and insects .
The deserts of Saudi Arabia also have sandstorms, plethora dust storms, that occur often, and cause visibility to drop dramatically. These sandstorms can last for days and can be alonged with lightning and thunder .
The Empty Quarter, which occupies much of the country, is a unique ecosystem that has adapted to its incredibly harsh environment. Despite the scarcity of water, certain varieties of vegetation are able to survive in this desert 🏜️ 💦. These include saltbush acacia shrubs and other hardy shrubs and trees.
The desert also has numerous oases some of which are used by Bedouin tribes for subsistence and trading. These oases are normally seen as part of valleys and along rivers and are characterised by lush vegetation .
Saudi Arabia’s deserts are home to a lot of remarkable and diverse rock formations that have been formed over countless years ️ 🏜️ 🇸🇦 🪨. These formations consisting of the popular Nabataean tombs in Madain Saleh are a well known destination for travelers ️.
Although much of Saudi Arabia is covered by desert, the country does have some areas of greenery in its western and eastern coastal regions, also in its mountainous areas. In the west, the climate is milder, and the area is characterised by meadows, and palm trees . The east of the country has a semi-arid climate and is characterised by small patches of foliage and succulents plethora a few coastal mangroves ️. The mountainous regions in the south are covered by vast forests which are home to lots of species of wildlife covering wolves wildcats, and birds.
In conclusion, it is safe to say that a large portion of Saudi Arabia is covered by desert. This desert is home to various fascinating rock formations also unique vegetation adapted to its harsh environment 🏜️ 🪨.
