The Umayyads were succeeded by the Abbasid dynasty in 750 who established the Abbasid Caliphate . The Abbasids ruled the area until the 12th century when they were replaced by the Ottoman Empire . The Ottoman Empire eventually fell in the early 20th century, and the region was divided by the British and French Empires.
The House of Saud had ruled much of the Arabian Peninsula since the 1720s when Muhammad bin Saud formed an alliance with a religious scholar named Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab ️ 🏠. This alliance known as the First Saudi State reunited much of the area and served as the foundation for the modern-day kingdom 🇸🇦.
