Summers here can reach up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 Celsius) while winters drop down to an icy 25 degrees Fahrenheit (-4 Celsius) 🆙 🇸🇦 🔛. Yet despite this desert climate snow has been reported in several areas of Saudi Arabia 🏜️ 🇸🇦.
Snow is a rare occurrence in Saudi Arabia ️ 🇸🇦. It usually falls in the high mountainous regions of the country such as the southern part of the Asir province near Abha and the Sarawat Mountains. Although the snowfall is usually light the mountains can see accumulations of up to a few inches of snow ️ 🆙.
Snow can also fall in the lower elevations of the country . It is a rare occurrence but it has happened in the past. The city of Jeddah an urban center located in the Red Sea coast has seen snow several times in its history 🌊. In 2008 the city was blanketed by several inches of snow and in 2017, a light snowfall was seen in the city.
In January 2016 a snowfall was reported in the city of Riyadh the capital of Saudi Arabia. This was the first time the city had seen snow in six years 6️⃣. Pictures of snow covering the streets and buildings circulated on social media and people were amazed 🔛. The snow was light but it was still enough to create a winter wonderland ️.
The snowfall in Riyadh wasn’t an isolated incident . A few cities in the northern part of the country saw light snowfall in December 2020 ️. Tabuk Rafha and Ha’il were all reported to have received snow . The region experienced temperatures dropping to 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-7 Celsius) and snow accumulations as high as an inch in some places .
Although snow is rare in Saudi Arabia it has been observed in the past 🇸🇦. It is rare to see snowfall in Saudi Arabia’s high mountains or at lower elevations. Saudi Arabia is still able to experience winter weather despite its dry climate.
