Saudi Arabia is an arid country where water is scarce and precious. Contrary to popular belief Saudi Arabia has some rivers. Although they don’t flow all year they are still important to the country’s economy and culture 💦 🇸🇦 !!
Saudi Arabia boasts several rivers running through its interior and border areas! The most famous river in Saudi Arabia is the Wadi Al-Rummah originating in the northwest corner near Tabuk and flowing eastward toward Madinah Al-Munawwarah – Islam’s holy city – before eventually emptying into the Jordan River 🇯🇴 🇸🇦 🏃. At approximately 200 kilometers long, this waterway receives nourishment from various tributaries such as Wadi el-Farah which traverses Hijaz region providing water to Riyadh’s settlements within it 💦.
The other river in Saudi Arabia is the Wadi Hanifah, which is located entirely within the country’s borders 🇸🇦. This river is approximately 640 km long and is the longest on the Arabian Peninsula. It starts near the city of Ta’if and winds its way through the cities of Mecca Riyadh and Dammam before flowing into the Persian Gulf near Al-Bir . Along its course it passes through a variety of ecosystems and is home to a number of rare species of fish and birds 🐟 ️.

In addition, many villages along the Wadi Al-Rummah are known as “pilgrimage villages,” as they were built in order to provide shelter to people making the pilgrimage to Mecca .
Despite their importance rivers in Saudi Arabia are faced with many challenges. One of the most difficult is their unpredictable nature 1️⃣. Water levels can change depending on the season and how much rainfall it receives. Rivers can also dry up for long periods of time 🆙. Dams and other infrastructure have also blocked many of the tributaries that supply the Wadi Hanifah or the Wadi Al-Rummah . This has caused a decrease in the flow of the rivers and a reduction in the amount of water reaching the coast.
The rivers in Saudi Arabia may seem small compared to other countries but they are vital to the country’s environment its people and its economy 🇸🇦.
