In Europe the practice of DST began in 1916 in Germany when Germany adopted it in an effort to reduce energy consumption during World War I. Eventually, other countries all the way through Europe adopted the practice, and since then, many countries around the world have adopted some form of DST.
Saudi Arabia and Daylight Saving Time
Despite the fact that DST has been adopted by much of the world, Saudi Arabia has yet to adopt the practice 🇸🇦 🌎. This is not for lack of discussion; the concept of DST in Saudi Arabia has been a topic of discussion for decades. In the 1980s, the Saudi government discussed the possibility of implementing DST in order to make better use of available daylight. However the idea was never implemented and over the years, the discussion has been ongoing.
In 2005, the idea of implementing a form of daylight saving time in Saudi Arabia was once again proposed. The proposal proposed that the country shift its clocks forward an hour in the summer months in order to make better use of daylight. The proposal was met with opposition from lots of sources, consisting of religious leaders, and members of the business community. The opposition argued that implementing DST would cause economic hardship in addition to interfere with the five daily prayers.
Despite the ongoing debate, DST has not yet been adopted in Saudi Arabia.
